What size of art works above a sofa?
In short: the picture or group of pictures should be about two thirds as wide as the sofa, so 60 to 75 percent. For a sofa 200 cm wide, that is 120 to 150 cm. The bottom edge hangs 15 to 20 cm above the backrest.
This guide explains the rules in detail, with examples of how to reach the right width with several smaller paintings.
The two-thirds rule
As a rule of thumb, the art takes up 60 to 75 percent of the sofa's width. If it is much narrower, it looks lost above the sofa. If it is wider than the sofa, it overwhelms the furniture.
With several pictures, the width of the whole group counts, from the left outer edge to the right, including the gaps between them.
- Sofa 160 cm: picture or group 96 to 120 cm wide
- Sofa 200 cm: 120 to 150 cm
- Sofa 240 cm: 144 to 180 cm
How high to hang it
The bottom edge hangs 15 to 20 cm above the backrest, and 20 to 30 cm in period buildings with ceilings of around three metres or more. That way sofa and picture belong together visually, and nobody bumps their head on the frame when leaning back.
Without furniture below, the gallery height applies: the centre of the picture sits about 145 to 150 cm above the floor. Above a sofa, the distance to the backrest matters more, because the eye takes its cue from the furniture.
One large picture or several small ones?
A single large picture looks calm and clear. Smaller formats need company above a large sofa: two pictures side by side or three in a row fill the width and still feel light.
Leave 5 to 10 cm between the pictures and align the group on a shared centre line or bottom edge. Then it reads as one picture.
Examples with my formats
My paintings range from 20 × 20 to 70 × 50 cm. This is how to reach the right width with them:
- Sofa around 150 cm: eight paintings from the Fokus series (20 × 20 cm each) in two rows of four, 95 × 45 cm in total with 5 cm gaps.
- Sofa around 170 cm: two paintings of 50 × 40 cm side by side, 108 cm wide in total with an 8 cm gap.
- Sofa around 200 cm: two landscape paintings of 70 × 50 cm, 150 cm wide in total with a 10 cm gap.
- Sofa around 240 cm: three paintings of 50 × 40 cm in a row, 170 cm wide in total with 10 cm gaps.

Portrait, landscape or square?
Above a wide sofa, a landscape format looks most natural because it echoes the line of the furniture. On their own, portrait formats suit armchairs, chests of drawers or narrow alcoves; above a sofa they work best as a pair.
Squares are the most flexible: they combine in rows and grids without the group looking restless.
Try it before you drill
Cut paper to the size of the pictures and stick it to the wall with painter's tape. After a day you will know whether size and height are right, and you can mark the drill holes directly on the paper.
Mind the light as well: direct sunlight can fade colours over time. Light from the side shows the texture of a painted surface at its best.
